Before Summer Slips Away, Give Your Pool a Safety Check

A few minutes now can help keep the rest of the season enjoyable.

By August, your pool has probably seen its busiest weeks of the year. Family gatherings, neighborhood cookouts, kids home from school, and relief from the Texas heat all mean one thing—your pool has been working hard.
While most homeowners focus on keeping the water clean and balanced, August is also an excellent time to take a fresh look at pool safety. After months of regular use, small issues can develop gradually and go unnoticed until someone points them out.
Start with the pool deck. Walk the perimeter and look for loose or cracked coping, uneven concrete, or trip hazards that may have developed over the summer. Make sure gates latch properly and that self-closing mechanisms still work as intended. Safety barriers only help when they're functioning correctly.
Next, take a look at the equipment area. Pumps, filters, heaters, and timers have been running through some of the hottest weather of the year. Listen for unusual sounds, check for small leaks around equipment, and make sure vegetation hasn't begun growing into the equipment pad. A system that sounds or looks different than it did earlier in the summer deserves attention before it becomes a larger repair.
Finally, don't forget the pool itself. Verify that drain covers are secure, ladders and handrails are firmly attached, and rescue equipment—if you keep it—is still in good condition and easy to access.
The end of summer is also a good time to think ahead. Addressing small maintenance items now often makes pool closing (or year-round operation, here in Southeast Texas) much easier and helps ensure the pool is ready when cooler weather eventually gives way to another swimming season.
A well-maintained pool is more than clear water. It's a place where family and friends can relax, knowing the equipment, surroundings, and safety features are all working together as they should.
Enjoy the rest of your summer—and let your pool finish the season as strong as it started.
